Who's In?

>> Sunday, December 5, 2010

So... The new year is approaching. And I think it's time for another Healthy Challenge Go round!

Anyone in?

I think that a great start date would be Jan. 2nd. We will go for 4 or 6 weeks. I kind of felt like 4 weeks was too short of time to really see results. What do you think? Give me your ideas, feedback, and let me know if your up for the challenge. This time we will have a Grand Prize winner who will take all the cash and a 2nd and 3rd place winner so we don't all feel like giving up when we get off to a slow start.

Hope I have some takers.....

GO....LISA!

>> Tuesday, July 6, 2010

Well, I have to say that from the very begining I KNEW lisa would win. She's really good at this kind of stuff.

I'll send you a check right away lisa. Good Job.

So... Round three? Not for a month. We need time to re-vamp everything and get more people on board again. We are thinking of adding a 2nd and 3rd place. Weather it be an actual prize or part of the money pot. That way if you are behind and someone like Lisa is playing you don't just give up completely because you know you have no chance. (that was me this time) Keep checking the blog for updates on new rules and a start date.

Good job everyone. Enjoy the rest of your summer. I will see you in Aug.

So... I have FAILED miserably. To say the least. Nick and I just got back from Bear Lake last night and let me tell you.... we ate and ate and ate while we where there. I have failed to weigh myself because I'm just plain scared. Nick and I probably got only in the 40's this week. So dissapointing.

Hey friends of the club. We (Forrest and I fizzled out this last week). I went on a trip for a week and didn't pay attention to anything. And Forrest didn't have me here to help him be motivated. We are reporting in with 38 points each (a good guess). Sorry we are so lame. It's hard to pick yourself up when you get off the band wagon.

Nick and I did HORRIBLE. We totally fell off the band wagon. =( We ate treats like it was nobody's business. Unfortunatly it really IS our fellow challengers business! UGH.... Anyway, I really thought that my motivation would be better this second week. Maybe it's because it's the second go round. I think we need to take a longer break after this round and take some time to re-vamp and make it better and more exciting.

How's everyone else doing.?

50pts. for both of us.

I'm doing pilates this morning so you should all be REALLY proud!

Hey, Here's my points for last week. I got all but 1 point. I thought I got them all but then I read the rules again and realized that the chips I ate at the picnic were totally not allowed in a healthy well balanced lunch. Tash said if I ate only one serving it would probably be all right so I carefully counted out 10 chips. I should have known better so one point off for me. I slugged down all that stinkin water and religiously ate a vitamin every day. I even accidentally ate one on my day off. ( I don't believe in vitamins) So how ever many points are possible I got all but one. Feuf one week down 3 to go.

Report for Forrest and Glenda

Alas, Katelin bailed the first day. This was too intense for her and the motivation wasn't strong enough. Forrest hung in there pretty good. He missed three points on vitamins because I didn't remind him. Four points on sugar because of strawberry shortcake (which he loves) at a wedding reception and then on a slurpee because Kara wanted to have one. One point on exercise. Three points not having correctly proportioned meals or missing meals altogether and his hardest thing . . . three points for eating close to bedtime. Overall I think he did really well. I think this week will be close to perfect for him because he is going back to work half days and has something to focus on. Yea for Forrest! 58 points!!!! I couldn't quite get my groove on this round. I lost points for sugar, water intake, and exercise coming up with only 67 points this week. I am super glad Lisa is doing it even though she is going to win!

This week was hard for me. I don't know that I was truly geared up for this challenge again. I did make an effort though but, I was probably way too forgiving of myself if I didn't reach full potential.

What worked best for me is to exercise in the morning before going to work. This is somewhat of a challenge because I have to wait until it's light enough outside to ride my bike but not so late that it makes me late for work. But it's well worth the effort to exercise when it's cool than to try going on a walk at 8:30 PM when it's still 95 degrees outside. I earned all points this week. 72 points total.

Sorry to post so late! My husband and I went away for the weekend. I used my free day on Saturday when we went out to eat dinner. When we stayed at the Bed and Breakfast, I was able to eat the breakfast they served, minus the syrup, sweet bread and orange juice. We were able to get in some extra exercise with some walks around town, which was nice. I am loving the extra energy I have with this new healthy lifestyle! I have also lost about 6 pounds, and my clothes are fitting better. I got all 72 points this week.

Week 4 for Diana

Okay, I'm a little ashamed to say that I kind of lost motivation this week. I figured the winners wouldn't budge the last week since they were in the lead anyway. So, since I wasn't going to win I wasn't as strict with myself. I didn't exercise one day because I was way too tired and then I had sugar on another day. My total was 69 for the week! Still not too bad, eh?

Finale!!

>> Sunday, May 30, 2010

I (Aaron) had another perfect week! 72 points! This was the most challenging week for me. The hardest thing is when im at work and have access to free soda, which i love, but i have stayed true. Well, since a couple people really want me to post my experiences here it goes. I really don't have any tricks or secrets expect that i don't have a sweet tooth so sugar and candy isn't really that hard for me to give up. I sometimes have to go jogging at 11:00 at night because i have school and then work right after so that is the only time for me to work out. Other than that, eating well proportioned meals was something we needed to improve to start this diet, but since we have started i feel a lot healthier by eating more vegetables and whole wheat. I haven't been keeping tack of my weight so i couldn't tell you how much i lost but i do feel a lot better physically since the beginning. My motivation has been my ego, i guess. I am competitive so i like to win and finish what i do.

Kayla got 65 haha I kinda gave up sad day huh but thank you for the experience I am going to see if I will do this if we end up doing it a third time!! thanks

Last Post For This Round

Well, Nick did AMAZING this go round. He got the 71 pts. He did AMAZING. He just had one meal that really wasn't a meal. (cereal for dinner) so he lost one point. bummer. I got 60. I shared his free day with him and had sweets today but, unfortunately had some on Monday too. It CLEARLY wasn't that great for me. If only I could be a better exerciser. I will next time though. I really plan on doing A LOT better.

MaryEllen: 64
Morley: 64

It's been a good round. I think the purpose of the challenge has stuck. Mom says that she definitely feels guilty when she puts sugar in her mouth and I think that's good. I have been WAY more conscious about what I put in my mouth as well and how little I was exercising. Drinking water was hard for me but, I feel like I got the hang of it by the 3rd week. I'm going to keep up with the challenge to prep myself for round 2. It's a lifestyle change and I want to make it a good habit.

Thanks for joining me everyone! It's been fun to hear from everyone and see how we've been doing. Congrats to the winners!

I'm still a Winner, not a Winer

I would have had a 12 point day yesterday if i would have exercised.  Hoofing it to church wasn't quite 20 minutes of strenuousness even though I did 6 flights of stairs and 13 blocks of walking. It wasn't exactly continuous so I didn't count it. Also, I didn't get in 2 healthy snacks.  I barely got 3 meals in.  C'est la vie. My total came to 54.

Mark hasn't figured out his points yet but hasn't really been conscious about the Healthy Challenge.  He probably got the same which sucks because I AM conscious and not doing much better. I'm still a winner, and doggonit people like me.

I'd like to say congratulations to all the 70 pointers. I'd like to hear some feedback from those people. What has happened to you since you started? Has your life changed for the better? Christy lost some weight, but what about Aaron, Diana and Glenda?? Aaron needs to post about his experience. You can't just silently win every week and not say anything on the blog, dude.

Check-In

Okay, I haven't been counting points and I haven't been diligent. Can I just say that if Kent were doing the challenge, he would be right up there! He is doing Nutrisystem and so he has very proportioned meals along with lots of fruits and vegetables. So it is hard for me to get in there and cook for just me, so sometimes I skip meals and just snack(healthy items though). And I eat ice cream everyday to get my fill before the next challenge that I really want to commit too. So this new week I will work hard sticking to the rules and be prepared for the next challenge! P.S. It rains and snows here. So maybe I need to do aerobics in the house and toss out my jogging dream? P.P.S. Did everyone want me to be this honest? Or just say, ah, 40 points ? =)

It is hard not to have Sunday your FREE day

So, I check in tonight with a total of 70 points. I lost a point today by having only a bowl of mac and cheese before church not healthy proportioned. I lost my other point by eating a spoonful of Kennadees Captain Crunch. I wasn't going to count it, but truly it is straight sugar. I had my free day on Thursday (my birthday) and the first thing I did when I woke up was to eat two LINDT balls. Ummmmm . . . happiness. I did walk in the wind and rain at 9:00 p.m. tonight after the family had all left then downed the remaining liter of water I needed a few minutes ago. I will probably be up several times during the night. Yea! only one more week.

Modification Suggestion for the Excercise Rule

>> Friday, May 21, 2010

Even though I'm not in the running for first place, I'm really enjoying the healthy challenge.  I know that I've done WAY better on the challenge than living completely unrestricted.  I'm kind of obsessed with the rules and making them better so I have an idea for the Exercise rule. (for round 2 of course)

20 minutes a day for 6 days during the week, 2 points each day = 12 points (total minutes 120)
OR
30 minutes a day for 4 days during the week, 3 points each day =  12 points (total minutes 120)
You would be able to choose week to week which schedule you wanted to follow.

This would make my life easier. Just an idea. Let me know the pro's and cons or if this even makes sense.

Ok. This week I feel like I'm doing MUCH better. Lets face it. Last week was a bit embarrasing for me. Especially being "team captain" and all. (yikes!) But... I still don't think I'm in the 70's range. We will see how the next few days go. I did horribly thursday and forgot to take my multi, couldn't drink enough water, and was SO hungry before bed that I gave into temptation. =( leaving me with 8 lousy points. I can't let up now so I think I will be counting it as my free day and push through sat. and sunday. My temptation for bad things is out of town. Otherwise I KNOW he'd be wanting Saturday to be a free day. (bless his heart) He's doing the Half Marathon in Ogden this morning so everyone cross your fingers that he does well. Revisiting the sugar rule

>> Thursday, May 13, 2010

Seems like a lot of us struggle with sugar. Personally loosing only 1 point isn't much of a motivater for me.  I think we should alter the rule a bit (for my own sake).  If I cave early in the day with sugar and I already know I"ve blown that point, I'll definately eat more sugar that day.

Maybe we could loose a point for each serving of sugar we have that day...OR make it worth 2 points like excercise and toss out the "no unhealthy snacks rule". Just throwing it out there. We could start next week or wait until the next challenge but I need more incentive personally. Let me know if that would mess everybody up or help...?

Kason and Krystal were here Monday thru Thursday and we really lived it up. I'm scared to count my points. The only thing I know I got in was my excercise from all the walking. Murder she wrote.

Point Roundup

My happy point total is 60. Some exercise points killed me off at first but other than that I was doing really good and felt happy. Until the weekend rolled around and sugar was everywhere and in every activity. I think it really helps to have your whole household doing the challenge. So yea! to those that are going solo and strong.

Kayla and Aaron's "Well for some reason it wasn't letting us post on the blog so we are positng our scores in a comment. Kayla got 70! and Aaron got 71! Diana's Points

Today (Sun) is my free day, so I am posting today. I got 71 points!!! Yes! But it was so super hard. Not to mention being pregnant and getting over the morning sickness with a new appetite that has really kicked in. I think my main motivator is of course competition (like Christy) and that my Dr. told me that he was really going to monitor my weight this pregnancy and that I really needed to watch what I eat. I guess so I don't have a 10 pounder this go round, seeing my history of large babies. I'm curious to see if the no sweets/eating healthy really has to do with the baby's weight gain. Wow, I'm really rambling away. Good luck next week to you all.

My happy points for week #1

So I made it through the week with 70 points. (I hope I beat Aaron). I lost one point on day two when I had an out of body experience putting brown sugar on my cooked oatmeal which secretly I don't like (the oatmeal, not the sugar) but it was "healthy". WOW!! We really have to be on our toes with this. Then last night I ate late again (hurray for farm life on a Saturday) and went to bed right after because I had a headache. Minus one point for the eating two hours before bedtime. Hurray for my free day and Happy Mothers Day to all you amazing mommies!

SO . . . I went to a play tonight without eating dinner and got home at 8:30 and hurried to eat a healthy proportioned meal. Now I am super tired and want to go to bed but I have to wait for two hours so I won't lose a very valuable point. Oh my goodness.

Funny Evening

So, Mom and Dad were in town and they took us to Chuck-A-Rama. Our healthy challenge was the main topic of conversation. Including the kids. Ian kept telling Dad/Grandpa that he was going to have to tell everyone that he was drinking Root Beer. Travis was trying to justify things we could eat such as cinnamon pull-aparts (they weren't part of the dessert bar) and sugar-free frozen yogurt was fine, but rest assured Mom and I stayed strong. Dad on the other hand did not. He just kept saying, "I'm breaking the rules tonight," in his funny tone.
It's been almost a week. Just two more days and I'm sure most of us are saving our free day for Mother's Day, so enjoy!!

Healthy

>> Thursday, May 6, 2010

I would just like to say that the very first day was uber hard for me. Hard to work out, hard not to eat junk food, and hard to drink all the water. Now I am doing ok! I can drink all the water (if I am near a bathroom), I feel good about eating healthy, and I am kind of okay with no sweets. I am just glad we get a free day!! :D I probably wouldn't make it!!

Annoying

>> Wednesday, May 5, 2010

Grrrr. I can't tell you all how annoyed I am right now. I just popped a starburst in my mouth. Without any thinking at all. Until it was completely consumed I realized what I had done. OH NO. One point down the drain. Should today be my free day? I don't know. I was really kind of saving my free day to be with Nick and make a pie. Anyone else slip up without realizing what you where doing?

ugh.

Quit?

>> Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Oh man, I will just announce to you all I have considered quitting and just giving you all the money. Yesterday night I felt to quit and not do it any more. I have never had to worry--no be conscientious of what I eat. I just go "hey that sounds good" and eat it!
Ugh....
I think I have an addiction to unhealthy eating.

Great free website to track your progress

Just wanted to mention that I have been using this website to track my progress. There is a free version, so I just use that. It has places to track what you eat, amount of exercise, weight, and water consumption. Find it at http://www.livestrong.com/myplate/

Snack Ideas?

Well, ready or not here we go! I was just wondering what everyone's favorite, "healthy" snack is for some ideas other than my own. My favorites are dried fruit, fresh fruit, string cheese. I welcome any other suggestions.

Water Rule and Sugar Rant

>> Sunday, May 2, 2010

Some people may have trouble with the 2 liters of water rule. If you drink milk or juice that counts as part of your ounces. A lot of us are used to drinking a glass of milk at every meal and this counts towards your overall hydration. Just be sure you check the ingredients on your juice and make sure it doesn't have any added sugar, etc.

I'm so excited that so many people are joining the challenge. The winner is going to rake it in! I'm nervous about starting tomorrow because I haven't been practicing and I'm really in a food rut. I'm super tired all the time and totally depend on sugar for a pick me up...murder she wrote. I kind of think that refined sugars/various forms of processed fructose is a very socially acceptable drug. It's addictive, it gives you a rush, it comes in so many lovely tempting forms and has no nutritional value. We should use things like butter in moderation but sugar is the devil.

A few years ago, I went to a nutritionist because I was feeling super horrible all the time and knew I needed help with my diet. He gave me a handout that says 124 ways sugar can ruin your health. Here's some highlights to motivate us all but especially me.

Sugar supresses the immune system
Sugar upsets the mineral relationships in your body.
Sugar can cause hyperactivity, anxiety, difficulty concentrating and crankiness
Sugar can cause drowsiness and decreased activity
Sugar causes loss of tissue elasticity and function which results in premature aging
Suger interferes with the absorbtion of calcium and magnesium
Sugar can weaken eyesight
Sugar causes tooth decay
Sugar can cause arthritis, gallstones, hemorrhoids, vericose veins
Sugar can interfere with the absorbtion of protein
Sugar causes food allergies
Sugar can contribute to eczema
Sugar inhibits the healthy expression of DNA
Sugar can make our skin age by changing the structure of collagen
Sugar can cause cataracts
Sugar is the #1 enemy of the bowel movement
Sugar slows food's travel time through the gastro-intestinal tract
Sugar can cause headaches including migranes
Sugar can cause depression
Sugar can cause hormonal imbalance
Sugar can exacerbate PMS

I just picked out the ones that stood out to me but there's a ton more. Here's to being healthy!

Margarine VS. Butter

Interesting....Have you read about this yet? Just a little tid bit of information before we start our Healthy Challenge. Only a few more days!

I just love the food industry. They get us to eat some serious crap and convince us that it's not that bad for us!

This is really interesting ...

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings…
DO YOU KNOW... the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has few - and – only because they
are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine...

Very High in Trans fatty acids.

Triples risk of coronary heart disease .
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..

Lowers the quality of breast milk.

Decreases your immune response.

Decreases your insulin response.

HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY THAT IS VERY INTERESTING;
and the most disturbing FACT about Margarine:

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... And shares 27 ingredients with PAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it.. Even those teeny weenie micro-organisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?
PLEASE pass the BUTTER!

Trial Run!

>> Thursday, April 22, 2010

Just wanted to let you know that I did a trial run last week. It was harder than I thought it would be, but its totally doable. Wanted to pass on an idea. I put my sheet that I track my daily points on in a sheet protector and wrote on it with a dry erase marker. That makes it reusable each week.

HFCS- High Fructose Corn Syrup

>> Saturday, April 17, 2010

So, I was reading my Dr. Mercola newsletter. Found this. And thought I'd like to share.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) has become a modern-day plague. Not only does it contribute to our obesity epidemic, but it has also been linked to diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Sadly, the average consumption of fructose has doubled between 1980 and 1994. Soft drinks and some fruit drinks are a major source of HFCS, but it is also found in many other products, from crackers to salad dressing.

Fructose contains zero enzymes, vitamins or minerals- and it leeches micro nutrients from your body. It doesn't metabolize the same as sugar and because it's often consumed as a liquid, it's negative effects are multiplied.

Why is it found in so many products? Because, after air, water, and salt, it's the cheapest ingredient in the American food chain (and we know how the food industry likes to save money...)

I'd also urge you to be on the lookout for HFCS in its many "disguises"- conveniently (for the food industry) labeled as chicory, inulin, isoglucose, glucose-fructose syrup, fruit fructose, and others.

mercola.com

So...in short. Avoid this. It makes you fat and ruins your metabolism and also makes you hungrier. Just thought I'd share that little tid bit.

Point Update

>> Tuesday, April 13, 2010

It has come to our attention that the "8 bonus point" rule is moot. If everyone gets 8 bonus points to use however they want, whether at the beginning or end of the challenge it doesn't really help (or hinder) anyone.

Please disregard the portion of the Healthy Challenge Requirements that discuss the 8 bonus points.

Thanks,
The Management (Kamilla)

Looking forward to the Challenge!

>> Monday, April 12, 2010

Well, I'll just have you all know that I am definitely on board with this new goal. I'm excited and hope I can stay motivated. Sweets are definitely my weakness. As for the water consumption, 2 liters does seem like a lot, but they usually say to drink 8 cups of water a day. 8 oz. is a cup full. Times that by 8 and that equals 64 oz. So I don't think that is anymore than the recommended. Any other opinions?
Thanks for putting this together Kamilla!

The Countdown Begins!!!

21 days until it starts. Terra said I should practice drinking 2 liters of water a day. So far I think it's too much. What do you think? Should we change that? I know water drinking is important but WOW! Maria said that each person should consume 1/2 of their body weight in Oz. I think. That seems like a lot still.

Let me know what you think.

Gearing Up

>> Sunday, April 11, 2010

I am really trying to get prepped for this healthy challenge. I'm kind of nervous because now that I've familiarized myself with the rules, I'm becoming more aware of all the naughty habits I have. I'm glad we have until May 3rd to start because I need the time to really get in the mindset of no sugar, no caffeine, no french fries etc. I'm in deep trouble if I'm going to try and have this baby natural-- I can't be gaining all sorts of unnecessary weight. I just don't fancy delivering a 9 pound french fry baby, especially on the first go round. I haven't gained a ton of weight up to this point because I haven't had much of an appetite until the past month. Unfortunately I've gotten kind of out of control because I'm not working and I have a lot of alone time to eat whatever I'm craving. Somehow I managed to discover Little Debbie's Fancy Cakes. It's bad. I know it's bad because over the past couple of days since Kamilla told me about the challenge, I've had to face what I've been doing to me and little bonnet in my belly.

I really hope we have a lot of participants! Can't wait to see who joins!

love,
Maria
