Opinions on the "no sugar" rule

>> Sunday, May 9, 2010

No sugar meaning no candy, desserts, fruit juice, soda of course. But what about granola bars, syrup on pancakes, cold cereal (obviously not Trix, Lucky Charms, or the real sugary ones). Need your opinions on how sugar strict we need to be.

I think the best rule of thumb on the sugar thing is this.... If you want a pancake eat a whole wheat one. If you want syrup use portion control. Don't over do it. And DON'T have 3-4 pancakes. Make sure you are eating a BALANCED meal with your pancakes like eggs or something with a glass of milk. Cereal goes the same way. ex. Raisen Bran is a good choice but isn't LOADED with sugar yet... has some. I think with the sugar rule (and this is how I'm doing it) DON'T indulge in an oatmeal cookie and say that it's healthy because it's got oatmeal in it. You know it's packed full of sugar. If your going to eat a granola bar look at the sugar intake and measure out if it's really going to be that good for you. If it's packed full of vitamins and is low on grams of sugar than I say go for it. (even if it does have a little choc. in it.) Use your best judgement. I think if you feel any ounce of guilt about something you put in your mouth and your counting it then it's probably a no no. Eliminate it if you question it. Also remember when looking at ingredients that ASPERTAME the devil and it is in a lot of things and is actually worse for you than sugar. If something says it's "sugar free" it will most likely have aspertame in it. Your body can process sugar better than aspertame and I suggest going for small amounts of sugar vs. lots of aspertame.

the end.

My opinion is that the nutritional value has to outweigh the amount of sugar. Granola Bars have a good amount of nutritional value, but syrup doesn't. Ulitmately we need to stay away from any artificial sweetners including High Fructose Corn Syrup and other sweets in foods that have little or no nutritional value. They are considered "empty calories" that the body burns really fast giving you that sugar spike but making you hungrier because it burns too fast. We need to eat things that "stick to our ribs" to keep our metabolisms burning all day long. We should never go hungry because it makes us tired and that's when we are going to want something sweet as a pick me up. Also look at where the sugar falls on the ingredients list. If it is in the first 3 ingredients then that means there is a lot of it in there. Hope this helps and isn't too long.

You know if you are physically adding sugar to something like with syrup or jam that should be a no-no. I decided to put honey on my hot cereal to get it down. If you eat bread dry it will help with your water intake as it will be necessary to drink to get it down. Ha, ha. "get it down" . . . sounds like I am in pain.
